Rwanda has entered the history books as the first African nation to successfully host a public demonstration of a self-flying electric air taxi. The groundbreaking flight took place on September 4, 2025, during the Aviation Africa 2025 Summit in Kigali, marking a major milestone for the continent’s aviation industry.

The aircraft, the EHang EH216-S developed by China’s EHang in partnership with China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), is an autonomous aerial vehicle designed to transport passengers without a human pilot. The electric-powered air taxi is equipped with advanced navigation systems and safety mechanisms, making it capable of operating in busy urban environments where traffic congestion remains a growing challenge.

Rwanda’s government highlighted that the demonstration is part of its broader strategy to position the country as a leader in innovative transport technologies and to strengthen its appeal as a global tourism hub. Officials explained that the introduction of air taxi in the country could provide a fast, eco-friendly, and futuristic solution to urban mobility, cutting down travel time significantly while reducing the strain on conventional road systems.

The event attracted aviation experts, government representatives, and international delegates attending the summit, all eager to witness the future of transport firsthand. According to Rwanda’s Ministry of Infrastructure, the demonstration underscores the nation’s commitment to embracing advanced technology and creating an enabling environment for innovation.

The launch of the autonomous electric air taxi has drawn widespread attention across African nations.  Analysts believe Rwanda’s pioneering step could open the door for more African countries to explore similar innovations in aviation and smart mobility.
