A court in Equatorial Guinea has sentenced Baltasar Ebang Engonga, a senior government official and former head of the national financial investigation agency, to eight years in prison for embezzling government funds. The Bioko provincial tribunal found Engonga guilty of diverting funds allocated for professional travel expenses for personal use.

The ruling, confirmed by Hilario Mitogo, Supreme Court press director, via WhatsApp on Wednesday, also includes a fine of $220,000. Engonga’s conviction highlights ongoing concerns about corruption in government institutions.
