ASUU is currently Not on strike, The strike that  began in some branches like the University of Jos and the University of Abuja, where salaries were not paid on time, following the union’s “No Pay, No Work” policy, has been called off following payment of salaries. Although ASUU President Chris Piwuna confirmed that the union is not on indefinite nationwide strike yet, but branches where salaries remain unpaid are on strike, and others have resumed work after receiving their payments. However, leadership newspaper reports that  "the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has backed down from its earlier threat to embark on strike action, following the late disbursement of June 2025 salaries to its members. Chairman of University of Abuja branch of ASUU, Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh, confirmed this in an interview with LEADERSHIP on Tuesday."

The strike started around early July 2025, with the union threatening to escalate if salaries are not paid by the end of July. Some branches have suspended the strike as salaries began to be paid late but before the strike ultimatum expired. Here are four things to note about ASUU Strike are:

1. Strike Triggered by Delayed June Salaries: Sahara Reporters states that  some ASUU branches where June 2025 salaries were not paid on time have commenced strike action, enforcing their "No Pay, No Work" policy. This includes branches like the University of Jos and the University of Abuja.

2. Not Yet an Indefinite Nationwide Strike: ASUU President Chris Piwuna clarified that the strike is not indefinite nationwide yet. Only branches with unpaid salaries are currently on strike, while those paid have resumed work.

3. Government Payroll System Change Blamed: The union blames the worsening salary delays on the federal government’s shift from the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System (IPPIS) to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS), accusing officials of deliberate stalling.

4. Potential Escalation if Salaries Not Paid: ASUU has warned it will escalate to a full nationwide strike if salaries, including July 2025 salaries, are not paid by the end of July.
