“Make gods for us who will lead us”…the people said to Aaron. They were all running out of patience, waiting for Moses had let boredom and doubt creep into their weak minds. 

They already gave in to their familiar ways and pleasures of seeking other gods as Egyptians did. 

Aaron looked at the crowd, not wanting to further aggravate them as they were already displeased about Moses late return.

 He thought it wise to quickly build them something, it would keep them busy until Moses gets back. 

From all his years serving the Egyptians, he surely knew how to sculpt something out of the gold earrings and ornaments the people brought before him.

 After some hours of seating and chiselling the calf came out looking great, proud of himself and his art, he announced a great feast for the next day. The people saw the calf and in excitement they say, “These be your gods, O Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.” 

   While this was going on God saw it and spoke to Moses to return to the people. They had quickly forgotten all the Lord had commanded them and turn to the corrupt ways they acquired from the Egyptians. 

The consequences of their action that day led to the death of about three thousand men and severe punishments upon them.

But the children of Israel still didn't learn from their fathers. They strayed even in the promise land, which again led to the glory of the God departing from the temple, as described by the Holy Spirit through the prophet Ezekiel. Bringing a total fall to the nation of Jerusalem and Judah, their glory was lost, they were dragged through the mud.

 God was present in the midst of the people even when they made the calf of gold, but their idolatry blinded them so much that they could not see or feel His presence. The sin of idolatry is one of the most grievous sins against God. 

God sees us His children as His bride, and each time we seek other gods outside Him, we cheat on Him and become adulterous. The scriptures described idolatry as whoredom, stating that Israel has become unfaithful in several instances. Just as any groom He wants His bride all to Himself, He is jealous over us. 

He doesn't want us to be adulterous as we are married to Him or to be consumed by idolatry. 

So today, ask God for grace to be faithful to Him alone. (Exodus 32. Ezekiel 16.)
